The Dept. of Surgery at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse offers a
traditional comprehensive general surgery residency program with a
curriculum emphasizing clinical surgery as well as the latest minimally
invasive operative techniques. While residents are encouraged to spend one
to two years in surgical research, this is not a requirement of the program.
Supervised experience in both traditional, open surgical procedures and
newer, minimally invasive techniques is provided and stressed at all levels
of the residency. The resident progressively acquires more extensive
knowledge of surgical physiology and increasingly develops skills of more
advanced surgical technique. The Dept. of Surgery emphasizes individual
instruction, however, scheduled teaching rounds and conferences are held
weekly to discuss clinical problems. Great emphasis also is placed on a
solid understanding of surgical pathophysiology; on the indications, conduct
and limits of operative procedures; and on the evaluation and management of
post-operative complications. A weekly Basic Surgical Science Lecture
Series is held for all categorical residents. The core of the program is
based at University Hospital, a 350-bed, Level I trauma center which serves
17 counties in upstate and central NY, and the adjacent V. A. Medical
Center. Resident teams also rotate through general surgical teaching
services of the adjacent Crouse Hospital and the nearby Community-General
Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. The surgery residency
program is supported and enhanced by the Endoscopic Surgery Training Center,
located within the Dept. of Surgery at the SUNY Health Science Center's
University Hospital. The Dept. of Surgery has extensive research facilities
in which both clinical and basic research scientists work as full-time
members of the department. The postgraduate program in general surgery
involves five years of training with the final two years devoted as chief
resident. First year surgical residents are admitted through the National
Resident Matching Program. Approximately 20 first year positions are
available each year. Five of these are for physicians who want to complete
a general surgery residency. The remainder are for individuals required to
have one or two years of general surgery training prior to entering other
specialty residency programs. Physicians interested in applying for a
residency position should do so through ERAS and will then be required to
visit the Dept. of Surgery for interviews with faculty and house staff.
