Schedule

Depends on rotation. Medicine was q4 call. Was a miserable experience during my rotation with the Geriatric team. However, reforms have taken place and transitionals are now assigned to the General Medicine team and the addition of a night float team has improved the medicine month tremendously. MICU was q4 and excellent teaching on rounds by attendings. Never carried more than three patients so was able to closely follow their management. Surgery was q3 call and manageable. Depending on the chief I would leave as early as 4:30PM or late as 8 PM. Ob/Gyn had roughly q4 call and I was on with another Ob/Gyn PGY-1 so the work was quite easy. Peds was q4 call, but were the most difficult because the PGY-1 covers the floor and newborn nursery. Electives, Ambulatory month, and ER months were no call and no weekends.

Teaching

Surgery had nice balance of work and teaching. The attending were approachable and taught at weekly conferences. Ob/Gyn has didactics on Friday which were also excellent. Peds has teaching during rounds and lectures. Medicine did the poorest job with teaching, but again things have inproved dramatically since the arrival of a new medicine program director. ER also had a fair amount of teaching by attendings.

Atmosphere

All the transitionals got along. Difficult to get together as a group because we were spread out on different rotations and schedules. The physical environment here is not the best, but the hospital is a community hospital that's been around a long time so I wasn't expecting too much. All the transitionals are american grads. The majority of categorical residents are FMG's. The non-FMG's were usually the prelim medicine people. However, the relationship is very good among all the different residents. In addition, transitionals are treated very well by the different departments and fairly.

Conclusion

The positive to the program is the program director is supportive of the transitionals and the minute one of the other departments have taken advantage of a transitional change comes swiftly. I feel like I received a broad clinical experience I had plenty of time to read. The only drawback is inherent to the transitional experience which is definitely "jack of trades, master of none". The graduates are going into radiology, anesthesia, & opthomology. This program was not ranked high on my list, but now that things are winding down and I reflect back on the year I've been happy here and would recommend this program highly.

Schedule

I am a Transitional year at Flushing and will do a Radiology residency in NYC next year. You have 28 week of call

2 months of Medicine: q4, MICU sleep 3-6 hours, floor: they just started night float and transitionals are not on night float probably, short call q4 5pm to 9pm. 2 conferences per day, new medicine program director : Dr. Fisher the USMLE teacher!!!!
Surgery 2 or 3 months q3: not as bad as it sounds, off post call, lectures, if cover ER little sleep, if cover consult 2-3 h

OBGYN: 1 month (if you want), q4-6, you are like an MS-5, awsome, whole friday is lectures, their own intern on call with you
Pediatrics: 1 month (if you want): q4, again you are an MS-5, good teaching, very friendly people

3 MONTHS of ELECTIVES: which is basically semi vacations depending on what you choose (suggest ER, Radiology, Pathology, Rad Onc, ANesthesia)
ER 1 month: very fun, the best rotation, no call M-F 7-5 (may be even better), excellent teaching, good prep fpr step 3
Vacation: 1 month

Teaching

Faculty: very friendly, laid back, down to earth Teaching: adequate, new PD in medicine Dr. Fisher is awesome

Atmosphere

out of 10 of us, 5 live in Manhatta, 20 minutes from upper east side, 25-30 form upper west. 40-45 minutes back to the city. I would not live anywhere else, 5 of us live around the hospital, very nice area, affordable rent. The hospital, with the exception of the L&D looks old, not pleasnat, but hey it's one year, and you are not studying interior design, this is residency get real... % of FMG: very easy EVERYBODY in the hospital except the 10 transitionals, keep in mind the smartest people from India, Romania, Poland, and Russia will probably compare to you at least

Conclusion

Good schedule, friendly place, live in Manhattan, easily pass step 3, prepared for Anesthesia, Rads, Neuro, ophtho... Drawback: wish it was in the city, hospital looks old the PD for transitionals is a resident advocate and will change things that are brought to his attention, and approachable. Call the department of surgery for any questions or if you need to get in touch with us.
