Schedule

Inpatient psychiatry hours are 8:30am-5pm with home call no more than one weeknight/week and approximately every third weekend. Work load consists of 2 admits and 6 follow-ups a day (aside from call nights).

Neurology and Medicine (including endocrine and pediatrics) months are a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences with light call.

Teaching

The faculty here treats you as an equal. They can be busy at times, but take the time to teach if you seek them out. Didatic time is devoted for all residents every Wednesday 8am-12pm.

Atmosphere

Camaraderie at USD is exceptional. This year's intern class is compiled of 1 foreign grad, 1 caribbean grad, and 4 US grads. USD has a brand new (built in 2006, I believe) behavioral health hospital where 1st and 3rd year takes place. There are three other hospitals in town where residents do consult rotations their 2nd year. 1st and 2nd year have the heaviest call schedule, and I still am able to have a life outside of work.

Conclusion

There is a Child/Adolescent Fellowship associated with this Adult Psychiatry Residency. I am very happy I ended up at USD. The city of Sioux Falls is 150,000, which I see as a plus. I did not want to live in a large city for 4 years. Here, my commute time to work is 8 minutes or less. There is also a good deal of diversity. The only drawback I can think of is that there are no formal rounds on the wards, which can be a plus or minus. Oh, and food is provided free of charge at all of the hospitals!
